What Is GA Dentistry?

Dentistry done while your child is in a deep, peaceful sleep

General Anaesthesia (GA) is a medically supervised state of deep sleep during which your child is completely unconscious, feels no pain, and has no memory of the procedure. It is administered by a qualified team of a paediatrician, anaesthetist, and pediatric dentist — not just a dentist.

Unlike sedation (where the child is drowsy but awake), GA provides complete unconsciousness — making it the safest and most humane option for children who cannot cooperate with dental treatment due to age, fear, or medical conditions.

"GA dentistry is not a shortcut — it's the right clinical choice for children for whom conventional treatment would be traumatic, incomplete, or impossible."
— Dr. Nikitaa Dhingra Sanan, MDS Pediatric Dentistry

Who Needs GA?

Is GA the right choice
for your child?

GA is recommended when standard dental treatment is not possible or safe. Here are the most common situations where we advise GA.

01
Severe Dental Anxiety / Phobia
Children who cry inconsolably, refuse to open their mouth, or have had traumatic dental experiences. GA eliminates the fear response entirely — the child simply goes to sleep and wakes up with the work done.
Dental phobia Uncooperative child Past trauma
02
Extensive Treatment Needed
Multiple decayed teeth, several extractions, or complex restorations that would require 5–6 normal appointments. GA lets us complete everything in one session, saving time, repeat anaesthesia, and cumulative anxiety.
Multiple cavities Several extractions Root canals
03
Special Needs Children
Children with autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, or intellectual disabilities who are unable to remain still or cooperate with dental procedures. GA ensures their safety and comfort throughout.
Autism ADHD Cerebral palsy Down syndrome
04
Very Young Children (Under 4)
Toddlers and infants who cannot understand instructions or stay still long enough for safe dental treatment. GA is often the only way to provide quality care without risking injury to a moving child.
Toddlers Infants Under 4 years
05
Failed Conscious Sedation
Children who did not respond adequately to nitrous oxide or oral sedation, or who are medically unsuited to these options. GA is the next level of pain and anxiety management.
N₂O failure Oral sedation failure
06
Complex Surgical Procedures
Surgical extractions, frenectomies, tongue tie releases, alveolar bone procedures, or any treatment requiring absolute stillness and a controlled environment for safe surgical access.
Surgical extractions Frenectomy Tongue tie Jaw procedures
The Process

What happens
step by step

From your first consultation to your child waking up with a healthy smile — here is exactly what the GA journey looks like at Little Bites Clinic.

Step 01
Initial Consultation & Assessment
Dr. Nikitaa meets with you and your child, reviews dental X-rays, assesses the extent of treatment needed, and evaluates if GA is the right option. We also go through your child's full medical history and any medications.
Bring any previous dental records & medical reports
Step 02
Pre-operative Medical Clearance
Your child will be reviewed by a qualified team of a paediatrician, anaesthetist, and pediatric dentist a few days before the procedure. Blood work or other pre-op tests may be recommended. You will receive clear fasting instructions (typically nothing by mouth for 6–8 hours before GA).
Fasting is critical — follow instructions precisely
Step 03
Arrival at the Facility
You arrive at our designated hospital partner facility. Our team welcomes you, settles your child, and the anaesthetist administers GA — usually through a small IV in the hand, or an inhalation mask for very young children. Your child drifts off gently within seconds.
Parents wait comfortably nearby throughout
Step 04
Dental Treatment Under GA
Dr. Nikitaa performs all planned dental procedures while the anaesthetist continuously monitors your child's vital signs — heart rate, oxygen levels, blood pressure, and breathing. Every treatment is completed to the highest standard without any time pressure.
Typically 45 min – 2 hrs depending on extent of work
Step 05
Recovery & Waking Up
Your child is moved to the recovery room where they wake up gently. You are by their side. Most children are alert and comfortable within 30–60 minutes. Some grogginess is normal. We monitor until your child is fully stable before discharge.
Children often ask for food soon after — a good sign!
Step 06
Discharge & Post-op Care
You receive detailed post-operative instructions, pain management guidance, and diet advice. A follow-up appointment is scheduled for 1–2 weeks later. Dr. Nikitaa is reachable on WhatsApp for any concerns in the recovery period.
24/7 WhatsApp support for the first 48 hours
Safety First

GA is safe.
Here's why you can trust it.

General Anaesthesia for healthy children is one of the safest medical procedures in modern medicine when performed by trained specialists in a proper facility.

  • Specialist Anaesthetist On-site A qualified, experienced paediatric anaesthetist is present throughout — not a dentist administering sedation. This is the gold standard of care.
  • Continuous Vital Signs Monitoring Heart rate, SpO₂, blood pressure, ETCO₂, and temperature are monitored throughout. Any change is addressed instantly.
  • Accredited Facility & Equipment Procedures are performed in accredited hospital-grade facilities with paediatric crash carts, resuscitation equipment, and an ICU on standby if ever needed.
  • Thorough Pre-operative Screening Every child undergoes medical history review, physical examination, and necessary lab work before GA is approved. We do not proceed unless the child is fit for anaesthesia.
  • Modern, Safe Anaesthetic Agents We use modern inhalational and IV agents with the best paediatric safety profiles, which clear the system quickly and gently.

Parent Questions

Frequently asked
questions

Everything parents ask us about GA dentistry — answered honestly.

Yes. When administered by a specialist paediatric anaesthetist in an accredited facility, GA is extremely safe for healthy children — even toddlers. Modern anaesthetic agents are designed for paediatric use, act quickly, and clear the system gently. Our track record of 500+ cases with zero serious adverse events reflects this. The risk of not treating severe decay or dental infection is often far greater than the risk of a carefully managed GA.
This is a very common and understandable concern. Current evidence shows that a single, brief, well-managed GA in an otherwise healthy child does not cause measurable long-term cognitive or memory effects. The American Academy of Pediatrics and FDA have noted that prolonged or repeated GAs may carry minor theoretical risks, but a single routine dental GA is considered safe. We discuss this transparently with every parent before deciding to proceed.
The duration depends on how much dental work needs to be done. Most sessions range from 45 minutes to 2 hours. Dr. Nikitaa will discuss the expected duration with you after the pre-operative assessment and once a full dental plan is agreed upon. We always aim to complete everything in one session to avoid repeating GA.
Fasting is absolutely critical before GA. If your child eats or drinks within the fasting window (typically 6 hours for food, 4 hours for breast milk, 2 hours for clear fluids), the procedure will need to be rescheduled for safety — eating before GA significantly increases the risk of aspiration. Please follow your pre-operative instructions exactly and inform us immediately if your child accidentally consumes anything.
Parents are not permitted inside the OT during the procedure. However, you will be kept fully informed at every stage. Parental presence is limited to the recovery area — you will be by your child's side as soon as they begin waking up. We ensure you are never left in the dark.
Children typically feel drowsy and a little confused for 30–60 minutes after waking up — this is completely normal. Some children cry briefly as they come around, which is a normal emergence reaction. Most become alert fairly quickly and are often hungry. Some may feel mildly nauseous. We monitor your child carefully until fully stable before discharge and provide you with clear aftercare instructions.
GA requires an accredited hospital or surgical facility — not a standalone dental clinic. Dr. Nikitaa operates out of empanelled partner hospitals in Faridabad that have all necessary paediatric anaesthetic, surgical, and emergency infrastructure. The exact facility is discussed and confirmed during your consultation.
GA dentistry involves both dental treatment costs and facility/anaesthesia costs. The total depends on the extent of dental work and the facility used. We provide a complete, transparent cost breakdown before you commit to anything. While GA does cost more than routine dental appointments, completing all treatment in one session is often more cost-effective than multiple clinic visits. Insurance coverage varies — we can assist with documentation for reimbursement claims.
