What Is Laughing Gas?

A gentle mix of oxygen & nitrous oxide that makes children calm, relaxed and happy

Nitrous oxide — commonly known as laughing gas — is a colourless, odourless gas that has been safely used in paediatric dentistry for over 100 years. It is delivered through a small, soft nose mask and works within 30 seconds to create a pleasantly relaxed, floaty sensation.

Unlike general anaesthesia, your child remains fully awake, conscious, and able to communicate throughout treatment. As soon as the mask is removed, the effects disappear completely within 5 minutes — with no grogginess, no nausea, no lingering side effects.

"Laughing gas is my first choice for anxious children. It takes the edge off without putting them to sleep — they're relaxed, cooperative, and most importantly, they leave without any fear of coming back."
— Dr. Nikitaa Dhingra Sanan, MDS Pediatric Dentistry

Who Needs Laughing Gas?

Is laughing gas the right
choice for your child?

Laughing gas is ideal for children who need a little extra help staying calm during dental treatment. Here are the most common situations where we recommend it.

01
Mildly Anxious Children
Children who feel nervous, fearful, or apprehensive about dental visits — even when they want to cooperate. Laughing gas removes the anxiety without removing awareness, making treatment calm and positive.
Dental anxiety Nervousness Fear of dentist
02
Sensitive Gag Reflex
Children who gag easily during dental examinations or impressions. Laughing gas significantly reduces the gag reflex, making procedures like X-rays, impressions, and back-tooth treatment much more comfortable.
Gag reflex Sensitive mouth X-ray difficulty
03
Longer Appointments
Multiple fillings, root canals, or any procedure requiring 45+ minutes in the chair. Laughing gas helps children stay calm and still for longer periods, ensuring the dentist can work thoroughly and safely.
Multiple fillings Long procedures Complex treatment
04
Difficulty Sitting Still
Children with ADHD, high energy, or short attention spans who struggle to remain seated and cooperative during treatment. Laughing gas provides enough relaxation to allow safe, effective dental care.
ADHD High energy Short attention span
05
First-Time Dental Visitors
Young children visiting the dentist for the first time. Using laughing gas for early visits creates a positive, pleasant association with dental care — setting up a lifetime of stress-free appointments.
First visit Young children Positive association
06
Injection Phobia
Children who are terrified of the local anaesthetic injection. Laughing gas is administered first, and the relaxation it provides makes even injection-phobic children comfortable enough to accept the local anaesthesia calmly.

The Experience

What happens during
a laughing gas visit

From the moment your child walks in to the moment they skip out — here's exactly what a laughing gas appointment feels like.

Step 01
Consultation & Suitability Check
Dr. Nikitaa reviews your child's medical history to confirm laughing gas is appropriate. It is safe for most healthy children, but certain conditions (blocked nose, respiratory conditions, first trimester pregnancy) require evaluation. We discuss the procedure fully with parents before proceeding.
Bring any medical records or medication lists
Step 02
Arrival & Pre-Treatment Chat
Your child is welcomed into our colourful, child-friendly treatment room. Dr. Nikitaa explains the nose mask in fun, non-threatening language — "magic air" or "space astronaut mask" for younger children. Parents are always welcome to stay throughout.
Light meal 2 hours before is recommended — avoid heavy meals
Step 03
Mask Placement & Relaxation Begins
A small, comfortable nose mask is gently placed over your child's nose. They breathe normally — 100% oxygen flows first, then the nitrous oxide is gradually introduced. Within 30 seconds most children report feeling warm, tingly, and pleasantly floaty. Many giggle — hence the name!
The gas has a slight sweet smell — most children enjoy it
Step 04
Dental Treatment — Completely Comfortable
With your child fully relaxed, Dr. Nikitaa proceeds with the dental treatment. Local anaesthesia can be given comfortably now if needed. Your child remains awake and cooperative, often chatting with the team. The gas continues flowing throughout treatment, maintaining the relaxed state.
Most children describe treatment as feeling "nothing at all"
Step 05
Gas Switched Off — Recovery
Once treatment is complete, the nitrous oxide is turned off and 100% pure oxygen flows through the mask for 3–5 minutes. This flushes all the gas from your child's body and completely reverses the effects. There is no hangover, no grogginess, and no nausea.
Recovery is complete before leaving the chair
Step 06
Back to Normal — Immediately
Your child can eat, drink, play, and return to school the same day. There are no restrictions after a laughing gas appointment. Many children don't even realise how much treatment was completed — they leave proud of themselves and without any negative memory of the visit.
No restrictions — school, sports, eating all allowed immediately
Safety & Reassurance

The world's most trusted
dental sedation for children.

Nitrous oxide has a 100+ year safety record in paediatric dentistry and is used in dental clinics worldwide. Here's why you can be confident.

  • 100+ Years of Proven Safety Nitrous oxide has been used in dental and medical settings since the 1800s. Its safety profile for healthy children is exceptionally well-established with decades of global research and use.
  • Continuous Monitoring Throughout Oxygen saturation (SpO₂) and your child's comfort are monitored continuously. The concentration of gas is precisely controlled and adjusted in real time by Dr. Nikitaa based on your child's response.
  • Child Remains Conscious Throughout Unlike general anaesthesia, nitrous oxide is a conscious sedation. Your child is awake, able to breathe independently, and can communicate at all times — vastly reducing any clinical risk.
  • Rapid & Complete Reversal The effects disappear within 3–5 minutes of stopping the gas — much faster than any other sedation method. There is no residual sedation, no hangover effect, and no recovery period needed.
  • Thorough Pre-treatment Screening Dr. Nikitaa reviews every child's medical history before administering gas. Children with certain respiratory conditions, blocked noses, or specific medical situations are identified and given alternative care options.

Parent Questions

Everything parents ask
about laughing gas

Honest answers to the questions we hear most from parents about nitrous oxide sedation.

Yes — nitrous oxide is one of the safest sedation options available for children and has been used globally in paediatric dentistry for over 100 years. It is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and dental associations worldwide. Your child remains conscious throughout, breathes independently, and the effects reverse completely within minutes. Dr. Nikitaa screens every child's medical history before use to ensure suitability.
Most children describe a warm, tingly sensation — especially in the hands and feet. Some say they feel "floaty" or like they're "floating on a cloud." Many giggle (hence the name). Some children feel slightly drowsy or dream-like. The key effect is a pleasant reduction in anxiety — dental sounds and sensations feel distant and far less threatening. It's a positive, comfortable experience for the vast majority of children.
Unlike general anaesthesia, full fasting is not required for laughing gas. We recommend a light meal 2 hours before the appointment — not an empty stomach and not a heavy meal. Eating too much increases the rare chance of nausea (which is already uncommon). A light snack or small meal is ideal. Your child can eat and drink normally after the appointment immediately.
Absolutely yes. Laughing gas wears off completely within 5 minutes of stopping the gas — there is no residual sedation, grogginess, or impairment. Your child can return to school, play sports, eat normally, and go about their day without any restrictions. This is one of the biggest advantages of laughing gas over deeper sedation methods. Many parents schedule appointments before school drop-off time.
Side effects are rare and mild. The most common is slight nausea, which occurs in a small minority of children — usually those who ate a heavy meal beforehand or received a higher concentration of gas. Headache is occasionally reported. Dizziness during the procedure is expected and completely normal. All effects resolve within minutes of stopping the gas. Serious adverse reactions are extremely rare in healthy children.
Laughing gas can be safely used from around age 3–4 onwards, provided the child is developmentally ready to follow simple instructions (breathe through the nose, keep the mask on). For very young toddlers or children who cannot cooperate with the mask, other options may be more appropriate. Dr. Nikitaa assesses each child individually to determine the minimum appropriate age based on their understanding and behaviour.
Laughing gas works well for the majority of mildly-to-moderately anxious children. However, it is not suitable for children who are severely phobic, very young, have special needs requiring complete stillness, or have certain medical conditions. For these children, oral sedation or general anaesthesia may be a better option. Dr. Nikitaa will recommend the most appropriate sedation method after assessing your child.
Laughing gas is charged as an additional fee on top of the dental treatment cost. It is significantly more affordable than oral sedation or general anaesthesia. The exact cost depends on the duration of gas used during treatment. Dr. Nikitaa provides a complete, transparent treatment cost estimate — including the gas fee — before starting any procedure, so there are no surprises. WhatsApp us for a personalised quote.
